Wood carving is a traditional craft among number
of tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh. The
main centre for wood carving in the state is the Wancho area of Tirap district. They make figure
heads, warriors, miniature morung, and figurines
depicting different vocations common to rural
life, animal figures, colorful masks and images
of Lord Buddha.
The Tradition of wood carving is prevalent in
India since ancient times. The tradition can be
viewed in the wood-carved temples of the period.
Wood-carved temples still exist in Himachal
Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. In India, each region
has developed its own style of structures and
carvings. Local traditions and locally available
wood varieties influence the final product. A
number of folk forms are developed in woodwork
all over India. The famous among these include
toys for children, utility goods and religious
objects.
Human beings have always been in contact with
plants and trees. Since then, we have been
using various plant products. This very idea
has helped in the setting up of woodcraft.
Wood has been crafted to form various useful
and decorative handicrafts. In earlier times,
goods of regular use – arms, utensils, axes,
toys and dolls for children, etc. were
crafted with wood. Excavations at Mohenjodaro
and Harappa reveal evidence of ancient Indian
woodcraft. From simpler forms, Indian
woodcrafts have developed to become one of
the most beautiful handicrafts of the
sub-continent.
Due to easy availability of wood in our
country, wood handicrafts developed freely
and gave a unique quality to the woodcrafts
of each state.
Sandalwood (chandan) is considered sacred by
most Indians. From this wood, idols and
prayer beads are made. It is a wood with an
enchanting smell. It is widely used in
cosmetics and soap manufacturing.
