Pendant, Locket and Amulets from India. An Amulet/Good Luck Charm meaning "an object that
protects a person from trouble", is a close
cousin of the Talisman, from the Greek, which
means "To initiate into the mysteries", consists
of any object intended to bring Good Luck and/or
protection to its owner.
Amulet has a huge range of silver jewellery, both
contemporary and classic. Birthstones and many
semiprecious stones are incorporated into our
designs, which are hand crafted in many small
workshops around the world, from near and far.
Wearing an amulet or a talisman, to protect and
to fulfill certain desires, has been an age-old
practice, not just in India, but, in other
cultures of the world as well. In Sanskrit the
word for an amulet is Kawach. The ancient people
believed in the power of the living bodies, be it
the sun or a tree, as well as in the presence of
the evil spirit. Not only that, they also
believed in the evil eye of the jealous. With
image worship emerged the practice of seeking the
blessing of Ishta, or the male/female deity that
the individual chose, or Kuldevi, that the
community worshipped. Obviously, it displayed
their faith.

Based on the purpose, there were two distinctive
type of amulets negative & positive. Negative
amulets provided protection by repelling the
negative forces, while the positive ensured the
fulfillment of desires like marriage, wealth and
the birth of a son. Interestingly, the number of
negative amulets worn is much higher than the
positive ones.
Amulets are known by different names. Jantar,
madlia, taveez & pataria are the commonly used
terms for an amulet. The most widely seen shapes
are the madlia or jantar and the pataria. A
jantar, also known as jalia, is a horizontal
tubular container attached with loops, strung on
a chain or beaded mostly in a black thread. Black
is the colour to ward off an evil eye. The
container contains magical objects like mantra or
a sacred hymn in Sanskrit, and jantar, the
diagram, or even the solemnised grains according
to the religion of the user.
