Bangle bracelets come in different styles and
designs. There are designs that have clasps and
there are designs that allow you to simply and
easily slip your wrist through. There are wide
silver bangles, and there are also thin bangles.
Sterling silver bangle bracelets are a great wear
for any occasion, and they are very flexible,
too, meaning, they can blend well with any
attire, any skin color, any time of the day.
The sheer variety of wristlets of India is
matchless anywhere in the world. Besides being a
mark of a married woman, these have tremendous
amorous and romantic connotation. In classical
Indian poetry, a woman's pining for union with
her husband or lover, is indicated by bracelets
slipping from her wrist due to her becoming thin
in the agony of separation from him. The tinkling
sound of women's bangles is full of significant
messages expressing her presence, her wish for
attention, her anger or her desire to exchange
glances. One of the most amazing range of
technical devices for locking and unlocking an
ornament is found in wristlets.
A simple bangle is slipped on to the wrist by
mere pressure, occasionally over a thin coating
of oil applied to the hand. Some wristlets have a
gap between the two ends from where these are
slipped on to the wrist from its side. Some
hollow bracelets, having similar loose ends are
twisted by pulling the two ends in opposite
directions and then slipped over the wrist.
In the case where a wearer wishes to have a
close-fitting bracelet, the goldsmith creates a
device whereby it opens almost into two parts in
which one end of one part is attached to that of
the second part with hinges, and when the wearer
has wrapped it around the wrist in this position,
the open part is pressed over a knob where it is
clipped, dovetailed or screwed to ensure locking.
The more handsome variety usually comprised a
prominent pendant attached to a circular ring
which in turn may have further smaller pendants
or other decorative elements affixed to the outer
rim. Often the screw or the pin that locks the
bracelet is itself a highly decorative element,
not distinguishable as a separate part but an
integral component of the overall design.
In most cases, the single-tier bracelet, when
hollow, is adorned with repousse work motifs, and
when solid with engraving. In two- tiered
bracelets, the outer rim is usually adorned with
additional lobes, pendants, jingle bells or
bunches (guchcha) of small, hollow balls of
silver tied together by silver-wire threading.
This work gives the feeling of granulation but is
lighter in weight due to the hollowness of the
balls and the peculiar grid of horizontal and
vertical thread work.
Rigid pen annular bracelets of circular or ovoid
form, which are cast or forged with animal-head
terminals, are an extremely archaic type.
