Brass sculpture of Hanuman comes
from northern part of India. Hindus believe in
ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. One of Vishnu's
avatars is Lord Rama, who was created to destroy
the evil Ravana. In order to aid Lord Rama, Lord
Shiva incarnated as a monkey, and was born as
Hanuman to Anjana, by the blessings of Pavana
Deva, who thus became Hanumans Godfather. Hanuman
selected Surya, the sun god as his teacher, and
approached him with the request to teach the
scriptures. Hanumans phenomenal concentration
took him only 60 hours to master the scriptures.
As fees, the sun god asked Hanuman to assist his
son Sugriva, by being his compatriot. Hanuman met
God Rama and his brother Lakshmana while Lord
Rama was in exile in the jungle, and searching
for his wife Sita who was abducted by Ravana.
Hanumans initial words highly impressed Sri Rama.
After he revealed his identity as the prince of
Ayodhya, Hanuman fell prostrate before him in
respect of the Lord. Rama picked him up and
embraced him. There began the story of Hanuman,
which is inextricably interwoven with Shri Rama,
and dealt with in detail in Valmikis Ramayana and
the Tulsidas Ramacharitamanas. Hanuman then
introduced Rama to Sugriva, and began his massive
search for Sita. Finding out her whereabouts, he
consoled Sita, and burnt down the city of Lanka.
Sri
Hanuman Ji then brought Lord Rama to Lanka,
fought the battle against Ravana with his simian
army. In that battle Lord Hanumana once carried
the entire mountain range of Mahendra in order to
get the required herb for Lakshmana's cure.
During the war between Rama and Ravana, the demon
king in Lanka, Lakshmana, Rama's brother was
badly injured. The vaidya (physician) said that
there was a particular herb called 'sanjeevani'
that grew on the Mahendra Mountain was the only
cure. Lakshamana was injured in the daytime and
the herb was to be applied before the night fell.
Rama lost his hope as Mahendra range was very far
from Lanka. Hanumana came forward at that moment
when Rama was distressed to the core. He offered
that he would fly up to the mountain and get the
herb. He flew as soon as Rama agreed. When he
reached there on the mountain, he saw all kinds
of herbs all over. He could not identify the
required Sanjeevani herb. He thought for a moment
and then enlarged his size and pulled the entire
mountain range from the ground. He flew back to
Lanka. On his way back, he saw that the night was
about to fall and the moon prepared to come out
in the sky. Instantly he swallowed the moon and
kept it in until he reached Lanka and the herb
was applied to Lakshamana. This reference is very
famous as it depicts the unbound energy and
strength of Hanumana. It also shows the amount of
respect he had for Rama.
