Woodworkers in India continue to work in the style of their ancestors with the simplest of tools. The specialization depends on factors like the kind of wood available and the craft tradition of the region. In the most famous wood crafts centre of Uttar Pradesh, wood crafts made of Shesham wood are very popular. Sesam is a rich medium brown wood with deep grains. One can easily see the influence of Kashmir designs on the Saharanpur woodcrafts. They reflect the designs of stone carvings of Agra, which is a true example of the Mughal art developed during the Mughal era. On the Saharanpur woodwork, brass, copper, ivory or plastic inlay is also done by carving the surface lightly and pressing in the precut pieces.
