the technical and trade name for a shawl cloth or
long shawl. Such pieces are woven on loom, have
an intricate pattern, and can be used as dress
material for chogas, achkans, sherwanis, gowns,
jackets or shawls.
The jamawar was the trade name for a special kind
of woolen fabric that was prevalent among Afghans
and Persians. Later, other communities also wore
it. It became so popular that weavers started
using the term jamawar even for those long shawls
that had floral designs over the field and did
not have any border. These jamawars were made of
pashm wool though some cotton or silk fibers were
also used at times.
The tapestry technique was used throughout for
weaving jamawars. Such stoles or shawl clothes no
longer illustrated simple booteh on the end
panels; the pattern was repeated all over the
field. Sometimes the booteh developed and
underlying symbolism and played a secondary role.
Briefly, the jamawar tapestry stole had and has
several elements such as various borders, woven
panels, and embroidered fringes. The most
striking feature is the floral design of small
repeated patterns or stripes on the entire field.
Some of the earliest designs that appeared on the
jamawar are stripes over the field. In fact, it
is sometimes affirmed that the jamawars are those
textiles that have ‘woolen textiles with striped
designs’.
