The jacket was replaced by the angarkha and the choga, which were both gradually replaced by the chapkanm, achkan, and shervani in the nineteenth century. The choga is described as a long-sleeved robe that fits loosely around the bodice and does not have a noticeably tailored look. It is worn as an outer-garment over a Kurta or angarkha and is generally made of fine woven wool, though fine cotton is also used.
The word choga and perhaps the garment itself is of Turkish origion. The choga was worn as an outer garment in Central Asia. By the medieval period, this coat-like garment had a vary definite presence in India and was the preferred garment of the nobility.
Throughout the nineteenth century the achkan and shervani gradually replaced the angarkha, jama and choga as the main outer-garment worn by men in the royal courts. The evolution of these close-fitting jackets and coats came through the gradual assimilation of British clothing styles into Indian attire. Indigenous textiles and their integral decorative elements were still favored over imported fabrics and certain stylistic elements of the angarkha, jama and choga were also retained.
