Exquisite grass mats by the master weavers of Pathamadai
in Tamilnadu. The tongue twisting ‘pathamadai’ has
become synonymous with soft, durable grass mats.
One mat can take more than three weeks to make! The
crafts people weave grass wefts through the cotton or
silk warps with a wooden needle. The mats are made of
grass that is collected from marshy areas near the
rivers in September and in March. The next step in the
process of weaving a grass mat is to soak the 'korai'
grass in the river. The weaver then splits the grass
into fine strands for weaving which are dyed in
brilliant colors. The newest look for floor mats comes
from traditional India!
