Buy Silk Sarees from ShalinCraft.
Silk Sarees are woven in regions of West Bengal
away from the delta, in the northern (Murshidabad)
and south-western districts (Burdwan, Bogra,
Bankura and Midnapur). Sarees with white, undyed
fields and simple coloured borders are common,
being known as gorad or puja Sarees, the latter
because of their titual association. The wedding
robes described in many medieval Sanskrit
documents reflect this aesthetic, and until
recently red-bordered, white silk Sarees were
often worn by high-caste Bengali women during
marriages. Such Sarees were also traditionally
worn on important ceremonial and religious
occasions such as the annual Durgapuja held
during the autumnal Navaratre(nine-night)
festival, which culminates in a clay statue of
the goddess Durga being immersed in the Ganga on
the tenth day. In some Bengali towns the statue
is draped in this sari and, in the past, the
local raja would be ritually draped in it during
a pivotal part of the festival. |
