Bronze is the most popular metal for casting
metal sculptures. Bronze alloys carry the unusual
and desirable property of expanding slightly just
before they set, thus filling the finest details
of a mould. The strength and doctility of the
material is an added advantage when figures are
to be created, especially as compared to various
ceramic or stone materials. These qualities allow
the creation of extended figures.
Bronze statues form part of a rich Indian legacy.
An example of ancient Indian bronze statues is
the figure of the dancing girl belonging to the
Harappan period. This statue stands out for its
outstanding craftsmanship, which contines to be a
trademark of Indian art. During the Chola period,
broze sculptures with their natural grace,
elegance, and beauty fascinated one and all.
These bronze sculptures look as fresh today as
they looked centuries ago. Indian bronze work
speaks volumes about the expertise of an art form
that was born long ago and still holds the
strings of continuity in the story of Indian
tradition.
The statue of
Nataraja (Lord Shiva), one of the Hindu
Trinity gods, symbolizes the cosmic force of
dance. It represents the epitome of rhythmic
motions. The contours of the legs, the arms
and the whole body of this sculpture exhibit
such realism in it that one can imagine not
only the earlier stance but also the
following one. The perfection with which this
motion is captured in bronze speaks of its
exquiosite craftsmanship.
While bronze craft is ages old, it was only
around the 9th century that there was a
large-scale development of this art. Within a
few centuries, it reached its peak. The Chola
kings constructed many temples where bronze
was used extensively. Generally the statues
of the main deities were made of bronze,
while the other small figurines were made of
metals like copper, brass and lead with a
little bit of gold and silver.
These figures were called utsavamurthis. The
craftsmen often made these statues in a style
which captured different myths associalted
with the deities.
After the Cholas, the finesse in this art
seemed to have faded away and the skill was
not carried to the subsequent generations.
But that gave way to newer styles. In present
times, Moradabad in Uttar Prades, Kerala,
West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Assam and Tamil
Nadu are famous for their bronze ware.
