Brocade silk scarves are generally worn by Indian women
on formal occasions. It has some extra shine
coming from the metallic thread used in the
fabric. Brocade is a luxuriant fabric made with
or without gold and silver threads, it was
originally made of silk, however today, brocade
is made from cotton, linen, wool, and man-made
fiber. It is heavier than damask but have a rich,
elegant look which is favored by wealthy
homeowners. Varanasi (still often known as
Banaras) has been India’s primary brocade weaving
centre for many years. One of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world; it
consists of a warren of streets leading to the
temples and burning and bathing ghats down by the
sacred Ganges. The weaving workshops are merely
frame looms under an electric light. The
complicated system of heddles is lifted either by
a young assistant using the traditional naksha
bandha (a complex arrangement of looped cords
that are hanging above and attached to the
heddles), or by the Jacquard method of punched
cards. Designs vary over the years, as one
fashion succeeds another, but there is a
continuous demand for hunting scenes, flower and
bird patterns, and dancing women. |
