Brass Sculptures
from India, representing the traditional
iconography of this ancient land.
In India, statues, carvings and castings are made
in attractive copper alloys like brass. The
traditional methods are still employed in this
field. India is the largest brassware
manufacturing country in the world.
A small village called Pembarti, in Andhra
Pradesh, is very famous for its brass work
throughout the world. Most of the residents in
Pembarti are involved in brass work and many have
their workshops in their houses. These craftsmen
mould sheets of brass into wonderful objects of
art. But apart from sheet work, the craftsmen of
Pembarti are expert in another skill as well,
which is ‘lost wax casting’ (‘investment
casting’). This technique of metalwork is very
old.
`Indian has witnessed a long tradition of
metalwork, which can be seen from the exquisite
statues found in excavations of the Indus Valley.
Most of the statues symbolizing characters from
Hindu mythology are made through the ‘loss wax’
process. Though it is not much in vogue today,
yet a real connoisseur of art well always prefer
cast statues to machine-made ones.
Over the last few
years, the work by craftsmen of Pembarti has
become extremely popular. The statue of a
peacock with its head and feathers held high
is a great favourite. Its outspread feathers
are depicted in flat brass, pierced in myriad
shapes. Then there are beautiful flower vases
made in fascinating shapes.
Moradabad is popular for its utensils, both
utility and ornamental, made of white metal
and electroplated brass. Varanasi is famous
for its cast and sculptured mythological
figurines in brass as well as for its
household utensils. In recent years, Mirzapur
has also emerged as an important brass-making
centre of Uttar Pradesh. Some of the most
beautiful metal ware of India for daily as
well as for ceremonial purposes is crafted in
Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Orissa,
Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
