composed of a quilt top, a layer of batting, and
a layer of fabric for backing, generally combined
using the technique of quilting. Another
technique for securing the quilt layers is tying.
Tying refers to the technique of using thread,
yarn or ribbon to pass through all three layers
of the quilt at regular intervals. These "ties"
hold the layers together during use and
especially when the quilt is washed. This method
is easier and more forgiving if the quilt is made
by hand. Tied quilts are called, depending on the
regional area, "lap", "comfort" or "comforter",
among other names.

designs of the Block prints with floral
motifs reflect the Persian influence from
17th century. India has been renowned for its
printed and dyed cotton cloth since the 12th
century and the creative processes flourished
as the fabric received royal patronage. The
art of Hand block printing was passed from
generation to generation and employed use of
natural colors extracted from vegetable dyes.
Records indicate that in the 12th century,
numerous places in India, namely in the
south, western and eastern coasts of India
became renowned for their excellent printed
cotton. The brush or kalam (pen) was used on the southeastern
coast, and the resist applied by the same method.
Rajasthan developed special technique of printing
and dyeing of cottons. While, in Gujarat the use
of wooden blocks for printing was more common.
Patchwork Quilts are very popular everywhere
because there is a wide selection available in a
variety of colours and patterns. For those who
are not looking for cosy, there are quilts that
suit even trendy tastes and more sophisticated
palates as well. Comforter is just another name
for quilt. In colder climates it replaces duvet.
You hardly need both unless the temperature is
near zero. Since a bulky comforter is troublesome
to wash and dry, a top sheet is needed to keep it
