Antique Tapestries
Torans for Wall Decorations. All the communities
of India decorate their doors with garlands on
ceremonial days. Strings of mango leaves and
saffron-colored, fragrant marigolds are hung in
gentle loops on the door. These are called torans.
However, toran is also the term applied to the
various cloth, metal or paper buntings that are
hung over the door. Scallops, triangles or
inverted arches are most used in torans and each
state has its toran specialty. Floral torans are
made to order in a particular color or with an
array of vividly colored flowers.
Antique Tapestries Torans and pictorial embroideries
were also produced for the royal courts. These
embroideries were directly inspired by the
miniature paintings in colour, subject matter and
style.

Tapestries Torans for Wall Decorations. Rchly
worked with fine details is a gadi set in the
City Palace Museum, Jaipur, comprising tow
side-cushions, a long bolster and a carpet made
of embroidered panels which show palace scenes,
courtiers, views of the city with the fortified
hills beyond, a rishi in a cave, and hunting
scenes.
Some of the finest embroidered panels were
linings for the roofs, walls and the floors of
tents for the royalty. When traveling, the full
ceremonial of court life was maintained and these
rich but yet light and easily transportable
pieces were used to adorn the tents. The tents
themselves were intricately appliquéd and the
whole effect was one of exotic splendour and the
ultimate in luxury. Some fine examples of tents
with appliqué are preserved in the Farrashkhana,
Government of Rajasthan, taken over from the
erstwhile Jaipur state. |
