Antique Areas Rugs
and Durries . Carpet weaving has strong traditions in India. In
the early stages, the designs used in the Indian
carpets were purely Persian.
Besides the contemporary, traditional designs are
also being revived. Durries made of fine Indian
cotton as well as of imported Egyptian cotton,
and of wool and silk are becoming popular.
The word “kilim”, of Turkish origin, simply means
a flat, woven rug. The origin of this rug can be
traced to Turkey and Persia from where it
traveled to Afghanistan and India. For some time
this particular kind of rug was made only in
Rampur, near Jaisalmer.
The art has now spread to Jodhpur and Barmar as
well. The weaving technique of the kilim is
similar to that of the durrie, with two beams
forming the frame. In order kilims the two sides
that were attached to the beams were left
unfinished, but modern kilims are decorated with
a colored fringe. Unlike the durrie, the kilim is
often found draped on the wall as well as used as
a floor covering.

Care for carpets and rugs, vacuum them frequently
especially when they are put down in busy areas.
Always vacuum them in one direction with the nap
and be careful not to suck up the fringe. They
will also need cleaning from time to time. This
not only makes them looks better, it gives them a
longer life since ground in dirt wears away the
fibres. Small rugs that are hard to vacuum can be
brushed softly, but do not brush the fringed
edges as this destroys the fringe. Roll up rugs
when you wash the floor because the edges of the
rugs absorb dirt from a wet mop or scrubbing
cloth. At least once a week, check under rugs. If
mildew is present, launder rugs that are
washable; and place those that are not washable
in the sunshine, mildewed side up. If the floor
seems damp, roll up the rugs and let the floor
dry thoroughly before replacing them. |
