Rajasthan in particular has a rich and long
tradition of leather crafts. Different leather
products famous all over India are produced by
the Regars of Ajmer, Jaipur, Alwar and Bharatpur,
the Bholas of Udaipur, Bhilwara and Chittorgarh,
and by mochis, cobblers, in other parts of the
state. Most of the products are functional and
utilitarian: jooties, shoes, different sized
containers for storing oil, foodstuffs and water,
perfume bottles, coin purses, large handbags,
playing cards, lampshades, saddles and seats for
horses and camels, musical instruments,
scabbards, knucklepads and hookahs. They are
skillfully worked, with a meticulous eye for
detail, form and design, and reflect the rich
culture of the people of Rajasthan.
At one time, leatherwork was a cottage industry.
Each village had its families of leatherworkers:
some who flayed dead animals, others who tanned
and those who stitched. These communities were
known by different names: the flayers were the
Chamars and Sangi kanjhers; the tanners, who used
a process known locally as rangna, were called
the Rangers or Regars. The makers of saddlery
products were Jingarhs, and those of musical
instruments, Debgars. |
